Carnaval de Mérida

Teniendo una tradición antigua, el carnaval de Mérida ocurre dentro de un ambiente de la familia.  En el transcurso de ocho días, varias actividades culturales y de esparcimiento ocurren, como la coronación del rey y la reina y la incineración del humor malo.  El último evento comienza por leer en voz alta la convicción del mal humor, prendiendo fuego a una figura que lo representa, seguida por una colorida exhibición de fuegos artificiales. Having a long tradition, the Merida carnival takes place within a family environment.  Over the course of eight days, several cultural and entertainment activities take place, such as the coronation of the king and queen and the burning of the bad mood. The latter event begins by reading aloud the conviction of the bad mood, setting fire to a figure representing it, followed by a colorful fireworks display.  The pictures here are from the Fantasy Parade held on Saturday, February 6th.

El carnaval este año ha sido generalmente movido a una nueva ubicación, los parques de atracciones estatales en la ciudad de Xmatkuil, al sur de la ciudad.  Sin embargo, esta iniciativa no está sin la controversia.  Los dueños de negocios a lo largo de Paseo de Montejo sobre todo están felices de ver el evento mueve, como que ya no tienen que aguantar una semana del negocio perdido.  Por otro lado, muchos residentes y visitantes están de luto por la pérdida del evento que ofrecía un ambiente de fiesta para toda la ciudad.

Carnival this year has been mostly moved to a new location, the state fairgrounds in the town of Xmatkuil, south of the city. However, this move is not without controversy. The business owners along Paseo de Montejo are mostly happy to see the event move, as they no longer have to put up with a week of lost business.  On the other hand, many residents and visitors are mourning the loss of the event that imparted a party atmosphere to the entire city.
